Moon Ebony
Moon Ebony (Diospyros malabarica), or Black and White Ebony, is a rare, highly prized Southeast Asian timber known for its dramatic contrast of creamy, pale yellow, or white wood streaked with jet-black, inky lines. Often used for high-end guitars and luxury items, this dense wood is considered one of the most visually striking exotic woods, frequently displaying wavy or marble-like patterns.
Key Characteristics and Uses:
- Appearance: Creamy yellow/white base with heavy black streaks.
- Rarity/Sourcing: Rare and difficult to source, with export bans in areas like Laos (c. 2016).
- Properties: A dense hardwood (similar to rosewood) that takes a high polish.
Uses: Popular for guitar fingerboards, back/sides, and tops, as well as musical instruments, high-end furniture inlays, turning, and knife handles.
